I finished reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy yesterday for the second time. It is a haunting book. Few books grip me like this, and it does it in a way I am not sure I like. But at the same time it is wonderful that it does. When you can feel tears coming after reading the last paragraph, and you still want to read it one more time, you must be holding a good book. That last paragraph is powerful. I am going to post it further down, for those who want to read it. It has no spoilers in them, as to what happens with the main characters in the book. Still, it might be more powerful to read it for the first time as you are finishing the book. I dunno...

Anyway, the book is about such a simple thing. A man and his son are traveling to the south, towards the coast. The world is a ruin. Ten or so years prior to this something happened. It is never fully told, and we can only speculate about what happened. But the aftermath of it is all to clear. Humanity is near extinction. Most animal life, if not all is gone. The thick layer of ash in the atmosphere blocks the sun from shining, thus most plant life is gone. What is left of trees are trunks ready to fall down. Ash covers everything, and what was once left of food and water has been scavenged pretty thoroughly. Yet the Man and his Son (they are never named) push on, with their shopping cart of belongings, down the road. They are the good guys. Everyone else, the few who are left, seems to be bad guys. Cannibals, raiders, madmen. Imagine this. You are traveling down a broken road, in total silence. Nothing has any color anymore, save the gray of ash. Any house you might see are either partially ruined or totally burnt down. And you are not likely to meet another human being for several weeks. You are low on food, low on water, and you only have two bullets left in your gun. One for yourself, and one for your son. When the time comes. This is an awful story. And one of the best stories I have ever read. Read it, or at least see the upcoming movie. I think that will turn out to be good.

And here is the last paragraph of the book. So do not read on if you don't want to read it now.

"Once there were brook trout in the streams in the mountains.  You could see them standing in the amber current where the white edges of their fins wimpled softly in the flow.  They smelled of moss in your hand.  Polished and muscular and torsional.  On their backs were vermiculate patterns that were maps of the world in its becoming.  Maps and mazes.  Of a thing which would not be put back.  Not to be made right again.  In the deep glens where they lived all things were older than man and they hummed of mystery."

BRAID!!!!

Reading about the awesome game called Braid again, while listening to one of the songs in the game. It is by Shira Kammen, and it is called Downstream:
magnatune.com/artists/albums/s…

Now, the thing about this song, and the level it has been put in, is this:
The level which have this song is one of the first. If you listen to the song, you can hear that it is a beautiful piece of music, and it is rather soothing.
This level is really easy, nothing difficult. Until you learn about the hidden stars. One of them is hidden in the leftmost portion of the screen. How do you get there? By standing on a cloud which starts out on the right, and slowly moves left. You must enter the level from the last level, so that a door is available to be used as a ladder to jump on the cloud when it approaches the left end. Now, here is the hard part, the cloud moves slowly. It takes about 2 hours for it to reach the left side.

How does the song fit into this, other than being in the background? Listen to it. Do you hear when it gets all... epic? When the soothing tunes end, and an epic "this is going to be awesome, something is happening OMG!" vibe rolls out? Standing on that cloud, seeing it move ever so slowly, with that part of the song in the background... priceless.

Oh, and the game is incredible. Just reading about parts of its story, and what things might mean... almost brings me to tears now and then, for some weird reason. It's beautiful
